Golfing That Rocks In Newfoundland

Humber Valley Golf River CourseThere is a great article in The Toronto Star that talks about golfing one of the local golf courses where I live in Newfoundland.

The article primarily focuses on golfing on the the Twin Rivers Course at the Terra Nova Golf Resort and The River Course at the beautiful Humber Valley Resort.

The article also references other golf courses in Newfoundland including: Pippy Park golf course, The Willows at Holyrood, Pitcher’s Pond and The Wilds At Salmonier River.

Jim Byers, the reporter who wrote the article for The Star, is very complimentary about the Humber Valley Resort and says

If Terra Nova put Newfoundland golf on the map, then Humber Valley’s River course is the layout that will really make the mark. Carved into a hillside above the Humber River just a half-hour outside Corner Brook and about the same distance from the Deer Lake Airport, which has direct Air Canada flights from Toronto, the course features enormous elevation changes, breathtaking views and a classic Carrick design with lovely bunkers and tough but fair greens.

The 10th features a huge drop – think roughly CN Tower’s observation deck down to the Gardiner Expressway – with views of the lake and the Marble Mountain ski slopes off in the distance.

“We’ve got great elevation changes here and that helps,” said superintendent Mike Rossi. “Newfoundland also is kind of exotic, almost an undiscovered part of Canada. And it’s a very friendly, open environment.”

Rossi said Humber Valley was named top new International course of the year by a couple of high-profile U.S. magazines and named new Canadian course of the year by some publications north of the border.

In addition to being a great golf area, it’s a hugely popular region for fishing, hiking and boating. Marble Mountain offers some of the finest skiing in Eastern Canada and it’s only a few minutes away.

The food is quite good down by the lake at a place called Sully’s at the Beach House restaurant.

Given the fact Fodor’s says Americans should discover Newfoundland, it’s probably a good time to pack up your clubs and try out some of the best golfing I have ever seen.
